Nicola Keeling

Committee Member

“I’m going to work with animals when I grow up” is a phrase often heard by parents and it was no exception with Nicola! She kept that age-old sentence of “can I have a dog mum” on repeat until mum finally gave in when Nicola was 7 years old. Hooked on caring for her beloved pet and other animals, Nicola started work at the tender age of 13 years at a large kennel, cattery and stables ….. “well, you could do things like that in those days!”, says Nicola. “Animals in need of attention were always the priority over schooling and if I could have had my own way, school would have been avoided at all costs!”. Nicola then went on to mercilessly subject her mother to the repetitive demand of “I want my own boarding kennels” until the sobering words of maternal revenge cut through the air: “you need to get a well paid job then so you can afford to buy one”. Undeterred by reality, college beckoned and then a job in the ‘real world’. Finally in 2007, Nicola realised her dream with the purchase of her own boarding kennels and cattery. “It’s not been easy” says Nicola, “especially during periods of recession….but I wouldn’t change a thing”.
